The one insect that can cost more than the whole building
In most commercial pest work, the math is simple: a pest is a nuisance or a health-code problem, you control it, and life goes on. A museum breaks that math. Here, a single carpet beetle larva grazing unnoticed inside a textile case can eat a hole through a hundred-and-fifty-year-old wedding gown that no amount of money will replace. A few cigarette beetles in a herbarium cabinet can hollow out pressed botanical specimens that document plants collected on expeditions no one can repeat. A colony of powderpost beetles in a period chair turns a catalogued artifact into sawdust. The value at risk is not the cost of extermination — it is the object itself, and the object is irreplaceable.
That single fact rewrites everything about how pest control is done in a collecting institution, and it is why museum pest management is a distinct discipline with its own standards, its own tools, and its own vocabulary. It is also, bluntly, a service that barely exists in Central and Northeast Wisconsin. The region’s small museums, county historical societies, house museums, rural libraries, and archives sit in older buildings full of vulnerable organic material, and their realistic options are a local company that sprays baseboards or a national brand dispatched from the Fox Valley that treats them like an office. What museum IPM is — and how it inverts normal pest control
Integrated Pest Management for cultural property is a real, codified field, developed by conservators and shared through resources like the Integrated Pest Management Working Group (the collaborative behind MuseumPests.net), the National Park Service Museum Handbook (its Chapter 5 covers biological infestations), the Canadian Conservation Institute, which lists pests as one of its ten Agents of Deterioration, and preservation bodies such as the Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC). What they all describe is a philosophy that inverts ordinary pest control.
In a restaurant or an office, you monitor a little and treat a lot. In a museum, you monitor a lot and treat almost never — and when you do treat, you do it to an isolated object in quarantine, not to the room. The pillars are:
- Avoid — keep pests out through building envelope, exclusion, and quarantine of everything that enters.
- Block — seal gaps, use good cases and enclosures, and control the climate so pests cannot establish.
- Detect — a systematic monitoring grid that finds pests early, by species and location, before there is damage.
- Respond — targeted, non-chemical eradication (usually freezing) of infested objects, plus fixing whatever conducive condition let the pest in.
Broadcast pesticide in collection space is not a tool of last resort in this model — it is essentially prohibited, because the chemical risk to artifacts and the failure to address the source both disqualify it. The pests that destroy collections — pest by pest
Knowing the biology of each collection pest is the whole game, because each one attacks different materials, leaves different evidence, and calls for a different response.
Carpet beetles — the quiet keratin eaters
Carpet beetles (varied, furniture, and black carpet beetles) are arguably the number-one museum pest. The adults are small, rounded beetles that fly to windows and feed harmlessly on pollen — but the larvae, the bristly little “woolly bears,” are the destroyers. They feed on keratin and other animal proteins: wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, horn, mounted taxidermy, insect and study-skin collections, and natural-history specimens. The damage is often grazed, irregular surface loss rather than clean holes, accompanied by the shed larval skins (cast exuviae) that are a telltale sign. Because larvae shun light and burrow deep into materials, an infestation runs for a long time before anyone sees an adult on a windowsill — by which point damage is done. Finding the cast skins in a trap or a case is one of the earliest warnings you get.
Clothes moths — the other fabric pest
Where carpet beetles graze surfaces, clothes moths tunnel and spin. The webbing clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) and the casemaking clothes moth are the two that matter, and their larvae also feed on keratin — wool, silk, fur, feathers, and specimens — leaving behind silk webbing, tubes, or portable cases and characteristic frass. The adults are small, weak-flying, buff-colored moths that avoid light and hide in dark, undisturbed places, which is exactly where vulnerable collections sit: closed textile drawers, fur and feather storage, upholstered furniture, and taxidermy. Pheromone traps for clothes moths add a species-specific detection layer on top of the general blunder-trap grid.
Silverfish and firebrats — the paper grazers
Silverfish and their warm-loving cousins firebrats go after the starches and cellulose that fill an archive or library: paper, book bindings and the paste that holds them, sizing and coatings, wallpaper, photographs, and the surface of artwork. Their damage shows as irregular surface etching, grazing, and small holes, often with yellow staining and scattered scales. They love dark, humid, undisturbed conditions — the underside of the bottom shelf, behind the baseboard, inside a damp storage room — which is why a silverfish problem is usually also a humidity message. In stacks and archives, silverfish are the pest you watch for most.
Booklice (psocids) — the humidity alarm
Booklice, or psocids, are tiny, soft-bodied insects that do not eat paper directly; they feed on the microscopic mold and mildew that grows on paper, paste, and organic surfaces when relative humidity climbs. That makes them a double threat and a useful indicator: their presence usually means the space is too damp and mold is establishing, which threatens the collection independently of the insects. Control booklice by controlling humidity, and you address a whole category of risk at once.
Cigarette and drugstore beetles — the specimen and pantry pests
The cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne) and the drugstore beetle (Stegobium paniceum) are small, humpbacked brown beetles with an enormous diet range. In collections they attack dried botanical and herbarium specimens, seed and plant collections, spices and dried foods, book paste and bindings, and pressed material — the cigarette beetle in particular is a notorious pest of natural-history and herbarium collections. They are strong fliers, so pheromone monitoring helps pin down where they are breeding, and dried-plant collections are a place a museum simply cannot afford to let them establish.
Powderpost and wood-boring beetles — the structural threat
Powderpost beetles (Lyctids and relatives) and other wood borers attack furniture, picture frames, wooden artifacts, and the structural timber of historic buildings themselves. The larvae tunnel through wood for months or years, and the sign is small round exit holes with a fine, flour-like frass beneath them — fresh, powdery frass means an active infestation. In a historic house museum this is both a collections problem and a building problem, and telling active from old damage takes an experienced eye.
Good housekeeping and storage — the unglamorous half of the program
Before any trap goes down, the cheapest and most effective defense in a museum is housekeeping and storage discipline, because pests need food and shelter and a collection space hands them both when it is neglected. Dust, lint, dead insects, hair, and organic debris in corners and under storage units are literally food for carpet beetle and clothes moth larvae; clutter and cardboard give every pest the dark, undisturbed harborage it wants. So a real program starts with the mundane: regular, thorough cleaning of floors, corners, and the undersides and backs of storage furniture; getting collections up off the floor and into good enclosures; replacing cardboard — which both feeds pests and hides them — with inert, sealable storage; and keeping the dead-insect count on windowsills and light fixtures down, because that debris is both a food source and a sign of what is getting in.
Enclosures do double duty. A well-sealed case, cabinet, or archival box is a physical barrier that keeps pests off vulnerable material and buys time to detect a problem before it spreads, which is why textile, fur, feather, and specimen collections belong in tight storage rather than open shelving. Good housekeeping and good enclosures are not conservation frills; they are the frontline pest control, and they are things your own staff and volunteers carry out every day between BugBoss visits.
Food, events, and the risks a museum invites in
Two habits quietly undo more museum pest programs than any structural gap: food and staff kitchens, and public events. A break room with open snacks, crumbs, and trash breeds the same cockroaches, ants, rodents, and stored-product pests as any office kitchen — and those pests do not stay in the break room, they migrate toward the collection. The fix is strict food discipline: food and eating confined to designated non-collection areas, sealed trash, and no food storage anywhere near collection space.
Public events are the bigger and more overlooked risk. Museums increasingly host receptions, weddings, fundraisers, and dinners in and around galleries because the spaces are beautiful and the revenue matters — but catering brings food, crumbs, and organic waste directly into rooms full of vulnerable material, and it does so after hours when no one is monitoring. Event-driven crumbs and spills feed the exact pests that then move to the collection. A museum does not have to stop hosting events, but the program has to account for them: restricting food to hard-surfaced, easily cleaned areas away from collections, requiring thorough same-night cleanup, and watching the monitoring traps closely in the weeks after a big event.
The season inside the building
Insect activity in a museum tracks temperature and humidity, and warm months are when the collection pests move and breed. Late spring through late summer is when adult carpet beetles and clothes moths are on the wing, cigarette and drugstore beetles are actively flying to find breeding material, and silverfish and booklice surge in any space where summer humidity climbs. That is when trap counts rise and when monitoring should be tightest. Fall is the season historic buildings take on their wildlife — mice, rats, and the fall-invader insects — pressing in through the same envelope gaps that let heat escape, and winter, in a heated building, is when a hidden infestation quietly continues at low temperature while everyone assumes the cold has solved it. A monitoring-driven program reads those seasonal shifts in the trap data and responds before damage compounds.
Quarantine, freezing, and climate — the three defenses that actually work
Because you cannot spray a gallery, museum IPM wins on three defenses that ordinary pest control barely uses.
Quarantine of incoming objects. Most infestations do not appear from nowhere — they walk in on new acquisitions, loans, returning traveling exhibits, borrowed props, and even the cardboard and packing they arrive in. The non-negotiable rule is that nothing goes straight into collection storage. Incoming material is isolated in a separate holding area, inspected, and, where there is any doubt, treated before it joins the collection. This one habit prevents more infestations than any treatment ever will.
Controlled freezing. When an organic object is infested or suspect, the field-standard eradication method is controlled low-temperature treatment — freezing. The object is bagged to manage moisture, brought down to a low temperature (commonly around minus twenty degrees Celsius), held long enough to kill all life stages, and warmed back slowly. It leaves no chemical residue on the artifact, which is exactly why conservators favor it over fumigation or spray. Not every material tolerates freezing, so candidacy and handling are decided with conservation staff — the point being that eradication near a collection is a conservation decision, not a spray call.
Environmental and humidity control. Pests and mold both thrive in damp, unstable air, so climate control is pest control. Holding collection spaces in a stable, moderate range — generally below about fifty-five to sixty percent relative humidity — starves booklice of the mold they eat, discourages many insects, and protects objects on their own account. Monitoring and documentation — the heart of the program
Everything above is anchored by a monitoring grid. When a trap spikes — the response protocol

A cluster of gnats near a window is a different situation than three carpet beetle larvae in a textile storage room. Next is localization: the trap grid points to where the pest is concentrating, and inspection narrows it to the actual harborage or breeding source — a specific cabinet, a damp corner, a piece of infested furniture, a bird or rodent nest in a wall. Then comes the source fix — removing the infested or suspect object to quarantine for treatment, correcting the conducive condition (the humidity, the debris, the gap that let a pest or its animal host in), and increasing monitoring in the affected zone to confirm the problem is actually going down.
Only after all of that does eradication of the object itself come into play, and near collections that means the non-chemical route — controlled freezing, coordinated with conservation staff — not a spray. The whole sequence is documented so the incident becomes part of the collection’s protection record rather than a forgotten scare. This measured, evidence-first response is what separates conservation-grade IPM from a general pest company’s instinct to treat the room and move on.
Historic buildings, bats, and the rural reality
Many of the institutions that need this most are housed in historic buildings — a nineteenth-century home, a former school or church, an old commercial block repurposed as a county museum. Those buildings leak. Soffit and fascia gaps, unsealed sill plates, balloon-framed wall voids, and roofline openings let in mice, rats, and bats, all of which foul insulation, gnaw, and carry their own hitchhiking pests into a building full of vulnerable material.
