Yellow jackets

Bald-faced hornets

Bald-faced hornets — actually a large type of yellow jacket, despite the name — build the nest everyone recognizes: the big, gray, enclosed paper nest, shaped like a football or a basketball, hanging from a tree branch, a shrub, or the side of a building, or tucked under an eave or in a barn peak. Unlike the open paper wasp comb, this nest is fully enclosed in a papery envelope with a single entrance near the bottom, and the combs of brood are hidden inside. The hornets themselves are large and black with an ivory-white face and white markings, noticeably bigger than a yellow jacket.

Bald-faced hornets defend that enclosed nest fiercely, and because the nest can be large and is often up high — in a tree, on a gable, on the upper wall of a barn — they are among the more intimidating nests to deal with.
