The bugs on the south wall aren’t a housekeeping problem
Every fall in the Clintonville area it happens on the same schedule. The nights turn cool, a warm afternoon follows, and suddenly the south and west walls of the house are crawling with insects — sluggish dark flies in the sun, red-and-black bugs stacked in the corners of the siding, orange beetles working along the window trim. A few weeks later they’re inside, tapping at the windows, and by deep winter they turn up again on the one warm day in February when nobody expects a bug in the house.
The most important thing to understand about these fall invaders is that they have nothing to do with how clean your house is. They don’t come from your kitchen or your garbage. They come from the land around the house — the lawn, the fields, the woodlot, the trees in the yard — and they’re seeking exactly one thing: a warm, dry, protected place to wait out a Wisconsin winter. Your house, sitting warm and prominent on the landscape, is the best cave for miles.
That distinction matters because it points straight at the fix. You cannot clean your way out of fall invaders, and you cannot spray your way out of them once they’re indoors. What actually works is stopping them at the outside of the building in early fall and sealing the gaps they use to get in. Meet the fall-invader complex
Four insects make up the bulk of the problem in this part of Wisconsin. They’re unrelated to each other, but they share a life strategy — feed all summer, then pile into a building to overwinter — so they show up together and get handled together.
Cluster flies
Cluster flies (Pollenia species) are the one people misunderstand most. They’re a little larger and darker than a house fly, with a distinctive patch of short golden hairs on the thorax and a slow, clumsy way of flying. The name comes from their habit of gathering in clusters in sheltered spots.
Here’s the part that surprises people: cluster fly larvae are parasites of earthworms. The adult female lays her eggs in the soil, the larvae find and burrow into earthworms, and they develop inside the worm before emerging as adults. There are usually a couple of generations over the summer. What this means for you is blunt and unavoidable — if your house is surrounded by lawn, pasture, garden, or field, the soil under all of it is producing cluster flies, and no amount of housekeeping changes that. A brand-new, spotless farmhouse on five acres of lawn will get cluster flies. A cluttered house in the middle of a paved city block often won’t. It’s about the earthworm habitat around the building, full stop.
Boxelder bugs
Boxelder bugs are the flat, half-inch, black bugs marked with red or orange lines that stack up by the hundreds on warm walls. They feed through the summer mainly on the seeds of boxelder, maple, and ash trees — a female (seed-bearing) boxelder tree near the house is a classic source, but they’ll travel from trees a good distance away. They don’t bite, don’t sting, don’t breed indoors, and don’t damage the structure. The nuisance is the numbers and the mess: their droppings stain light-colored siding, curtains, and blinds, and crushed bugs smell bad and leave a reddish stain.
Asian lady beetles
Asian lady beetles look like the familiar ladybug but behave nothing like the harmless native ones. They range from yellow to deep orange, usually with a variable number of black spots and a small “M” or “W” marking behind the head. Introduced to control crop aphids, they’ve become one of the Midwest’s most aggressive overwintering invaders. Unlike native ladybugs, they can deliver a small bite, and when disturbed or crushed they release a foul yellow fluid that stains surfaces and, in large indoor numbers, can trigger allergy and asthma reactions in sensitive people. They gather in enormous numbers on sunny walls in October before moving in.
Brown marmorated stink bugs
The newest member of the club is the brown marmorated stink bug, a shield-shaped brownish bug that has been spreading through Wisconsin. It follows the same fall-invader playbook — mass on warm walls, slip into wall voids, reappear on warm days — and lives up to its name when disturbed. It’s not yet as universal here as cluster flies, but it’s climbing, and the same control strategy covers it.
Telling them apart at a glance
Because the control is nearly the same for all of them, exact identification isn’t critical for treatment — but it helps to know what you’re looking at, especially to rule out something that does need different handling (like a true house fly problem tied to a dead animal in the wall, or a drain fly issue tied to plumbing). Here’s the quick field guide:

The common thread is behavioral, not taxonomic: all four show up in numbers on warm exterior walls in fall and reappear at windows on warm winter days. If that’s the pattern you’re seeing, you’ve got a fall-invader problem regardless of which species dominates, and the fix is the same.
Why they all do the same thing at the same time
These four insects aren’t related, but the Wisconsin climate has pushed them into the same survival strategy: overwintering as adults inside sheltered structures. Understanding the mechanics of that strategy is what lets you actually interrupt it.
The September–October window
As late summer turns to fall and daylight shortens, all of these insects stop reproducing and start looking for a place to spend the winter. They’re drawn to large, sun-warmed, vertical surfaces — which describes the south and west walls of your house perfectly. On a sunny fall afternoon those walls can be twenty degrees warmer than the air, and the insects pile onto them by the hundreds or thousands, basking and then probing every crack for a way inside.
That gathering behavior in September and October is the critical window. While the insects are massed on the outside of the building, they’re exposed and reachable. Once they’ve filtered through the gaps into the wall voids, they’re not.
How they get in
They exploit the same building weaknesses over and over: the junction where the soffit meets the fascia, gaps around window and door frames, the space behind loose or aging trim, utility and pipe penetrations, weep holes and cracks where the siding meets the foundation, and any gap at the roofline. In the older homes common around Clintonville, balloon framing makes this worse — the wall cavities run uninterrupted from the sill plate all the way to the attic, so an insect that squeezes in low on the wall has a straight shot up to the top of the house. That’s why you’ll find cluster flies at a second-floor bedroom window when the entry point was a gap down near the foundation.
The overwintering deception, and the warm-day comebacks
Once inside the wall voids and attic, the insects settle into diapause, a dormant state that carries them through the cold. They don’t eat, they don’t breed, they just wait. The trouble is that they can’t tell the difference between a true spring warm-up and a false one. When a sunny day in January or February heats up the wall cavities, the insects rouse, assume winter’s over, and start moving — toward light and warmth, which means the interior side of the wall. They emerge at windows, light fixtures, and gaps in the trim into your living space. A cold snap the next day sends the survivors back into dormancy, and the cycle repeats on the next warm day.
This is the single most common winter pest call we get, and it’s why people are convinced they have a new infestation in the dead of winter. It isn’t new. The fall-invader year, month by month
One of the most useful things to understand is that this is a single annual cycle, not a series of separate events. Seeing it laid out across the calendar makes clear why timing the treatment matters so much.
Spring (April–May). The overwintering survivors rouse from the wall voids as the weather warms and try to get out to return to the landscape and breed. This is when people find a second wave of flies and beetles at the windows and assume it’s a new infestation — it isn’t, it’s last fall’s population leaving. Cluster fly adults head back to lay eggs in the soil; boxelder bugs return to their host trees; lady beetles disperse to hunt aphids. Nothing you do indoors now affects next fall.
Summer (June–August). The insects are out on the landscape and out of sight. Cluster fly larvae are developing inside earthworms in the soil, going through a generation or two. Boxelder bugs are feeding and breeding on maple, ash, and boxelder. Lady beetles are working crop and garden aphids. The house is quiet. This is the calm before the fall wave, and it’s the window to plan the exterior treatment.
Late summer to fall (late August–October). The trigger flips. Shortening days and cooling nights end reproduction and switch the insects into overwintering mode. They orient to large, sun-warmed buildings and mass on the south and west walls, probing every gap. This is the one window where treatment and sealing decisively work, because the insects are on the outside of the building and exposed. Miss it and you’ve lost the year.
Winter (November–March). The insects are dormant in the wall voids and attic. On the cold days they’re inert and unreachable; on the warm sunny days a fraction of them wake, mistake the warmth for spring, and emerge at the windows into the living space. Vacuum them and wait it out — there’s no effective treatment for insects buried in the walls in January. The real fix already happened, or didn’t, back in the fall.
Why indoor spraying is the wrong tool
When people first hit this problem, the instinct is to spray the bugs they see indoors. It’s the wrong move for three reasons.
First, the insects at the window are a tiny fraction of the population. For every fly on the glass there may be hundreds tucked in the wall voids where no indoor spray can reach them. You can empty a can of aerosol every warm day all winter and never make a dent in the reservoir behind the drywall.
Second, it puts pesticide exactly where you don’t want it — in the living space, on windowsills and around light fixtures where your family spends time — to kill a nuisance insect that isn’t breeding, biting, or contaminating anything indoors.
Third, it does nothing about next year. The building will attract the same insects again next fall regardless of what you sprayed inside this winter.
The right response to bugs already inside is mechanical: vacuum them up. A vacuum removes them without crushing — which matters, because crushed lady beetles and boxelder bugs stain and stink — and you just empty the canister afterward. But vacuuming is cleanup, not control. The actual control happens outside, months earlier.
What actually works: exterior treatment plus exclusion
Breaking the fall-invader cycle takes two coordinated moves, and the timing is everything.
1. Early-fall exterior treatment
The centerpiece is a treatment of the exterior walls in late summer to early fall, before the insects begin massing. We apply a residual product to the sunny south and west walls, the soffits and fascia, the eaves, around windows and doors, and the other surfaces where the insects gather and probe for entry. When they land on those treated surfaces during their fall assault, the barrier knocks them down before they get inside.
The reason timing is non-negotiable: this only works while the insects are still on the outside of the building. Treat in late August or September and you catch the wave as it arrives. Wait until October, when they’re already slipping into the walls, and you’ve missed most of them. Wait until they’re overwintering in the voids and there’s no effective treatment at all — you’re stuck vacuuming until spring and trying again next fall.
2. Seal the entry points
The second move is exclusion — physically closing the gaps the insects use. This is the part that pays off for years, not just one season. We seal the soffit-and-fascia junctions, caulk around window and door frames, close utility and pipe penetrations, screen or seal gaps at the roofline, and address the cracks where siding meets foundation. On balloon-framed homes, closing the top and bottom of those open wall cavities makes a real difference. Every gap sealed is one the insects can’t use this fall or any fall after.
Together, exterior treatment and sealing attack the problem from both directions: the treatment thins out the wave that arrives, and the sealing shuts the doors it’s trying to come through. Do both, and a house that was overrun every winter becomes one where a stray bug at the window is a rarity.
Why rural and edge-of-town homes get hit hardest
It’s worth being clear about why the Clintonville area, specifically, is fall-invader country. Cluster flies need earthworms, and earthworms need soil — lawn, pasture, cropland, woodlot floor. The homes around here are, by and large, surrounded by exactly that: farmhouses ringed by fields, village homes with big lawns and mature trees, and lake cabins tucked into wooded lots. The more open, worm-rich ground around a building, the bigger the local cluster fly population it sits in. Add the boxelder and maple trees that feed boxelder bugs, the crop fields that raise the aphids Asian lady beetles hunt, and you have the whole complex breeding within a stone’s throw of the house.
None of that is a defect in the property. It’s simply the ecology of living in a rural river-and-farm landscape, and it’s the environment BugBoss was built to work in. A house on five acres of lawn near Iola or a cabin on the Chain O’ Lakes is going to sit in a heavier fall-invader load than a townhouse on a paved lot, and it needs a program that accounts for that.
What not to do: the common fall-invader mistakes
A few well-meaning moves make things worse or waste money, and they come up on nearly every call.
Don’t wait until they’re inside to act. By far the most common mistake. Once the insects are in the wall voids, the effective treatment window has closed. If you’re seeing them indoors, mark your calendar for an exterior treatment next August rather than emptying spray cans this winter.
Don’t crush them. Squashing boxelder bugs and lady beetles stains surfaces and, in the case of lady beetles, releases a foul fluid and can attract more. Vacuum instead.
Don’t rely on repellents or foggers. Indoor foggers and repellents don’t reach the insects in the voids and put chemicals where your family lives for no real gain.
Don’t count on caulk alone. Sealing is essential, but on an older home you’ll never find and close every gap, which is why sealing is paired with the exterior barrier treatment rather than used by itself. The two together are far stronger than either alone.
Don’t remove or over-trim trees in a panic. Cutting down a boxelder tree can reduce boxelder bugs over time, but it does nothing for cluster flies (which come from soil earthworms) or lady beetles, so it’s rarely a complete answer and often not worth it.
Which homes get hit worst
Not every building is equally attractive, and knowing the risk factors helps set expectations. The worst-hit homes tend to share features: light-colored walls with large south and west exposures that heat up in the fall sun; two or more stories, which present a taller warm surface and more roofline gaps; older construction with balloon framing, aging soffits, and decades of settlement cracks; and a rural or edge-of-town setting surrounded by lawn, field, or woods that produces the insects in the first place. A tall, pale, century-old farmhouse on open ground is close to a worst case — and it’s exactly the kind of home that’s everywhere in this part of Wisconsin. Newer, tighter, darker homes on smaller lots get off easier, but few homes in the countryside are immune.
