Each behaves differently, and the whole point of a proper ant job is knowing which one you have before you treat it, because the wrong treatment on the wrong species makes the problem worse.

Identification: knowing which ant you have

Getting the species right is not academic. It decides whether you bait or treat the exterior, what kind of bait you use, and whether spraying will help or scatter the colony across your house. Here is how the common ones sort out.

Pavement ants are dark brown to blackish and about an eighth of an inch long, with a pair of faint grooves on the head and thorax you would need a hand lens to see. What actually gives them away is where they live: under slabs, sidewalks, driveways, patios, and along foundations. The little crater of excavated soil at a concrete crack is their signature. Indoors they trail along baseboards and slab edges toward food, and they are not fussy eaters, taking grease, sweets, seeds, and pet food alike.

Odorous house ants are also about an eighth of an inch and dark brown to black, so at a glance they look a lot like pavement ants. The tell is the smell. Crush a few between your fingers and you get a distinct rotten-coconut or blue-cheese odor, which is where the name comes from. They are the classic kitchen-trail ant, overwhelmingly drawn to sweets and to the honeydew that aphids and scale insects produce on trees and shrubs. Their colonies are the ones that cause the most frustration, because a single population can run many nests with many queens and will split when you attack it wrong.

Pharaoh ants are unmistakable once you know them: very small, only about a sixteenth of an inch, and pale yellow to amber, almost translucent, often with a darker rear. If you are seeing tiny light-colored ants trailing in a heated building, especially year-round and especially in winter, think pharaoh ant and do not reach for the spray. They are uncommon in single-family rural homes but turn up in apartments, older multi-unit buildings, and institutional settings.

The one you most want to rule out is the carpenter ant, because it is a structural pest, not just a nuisance. Carpenter ants are big, a quarter to half an inch, usually black, and the strongest clue is season: large ants indoors in the middle of a Wisconsin winter almost always mean a nest inside the warm structure. Wisconsin biology and why these colonies are hard to kill

The reason nuisance ants defeat so many homeowners comes down to colony structure, and it differs by species.

Pavement ants run relatively conventional colonies, typically with a single queen, living in the soil and under stone and concrete. That makes them the most straightforward of the three to control, because knock down the colony under the slab and you have largely solved it. They mate in spring, sometimes producing indoor swarms of winged ants near a heat source, which startles people but simply means a mature colony is nearby.

Odorous house ants are a different animal. Their populations are polygyne, meaning many queens, and they are polydomous, meaning many connected nests. A single odorous house ant population can spread across a yard and into a house as a network of satellite nests sharing workers and brood. Crucially, when the colony is stressed, by weather, by disturbance, or by a repellent insecticide, it responds by budding: one or more queens leave with a group of workers and start a new nest elsewhere. This is why a homeowner who sprays every trail they see often reports that the ants seemed to spread to new rooms. They did. The spray split the colony.

Pharaoh ants take that same multi-queen, budding behavior to an extreme. A single colony can contain many queens and thousands of workers and will fracture into multiple new colonies at the first sign of chemical pressure. In a heated building they never truly go dormant, breeding year-round, which is why they can quietly build enormous numbers before anyone notices. Everything about their biology says the same thing: bait patiently, never spray.

The ant season in Central and Northeast Wisconsin

Ant pressure here follows the calendar closely, and knowing the rhythm helps explain what you are seeing.

Through the long cold, most outdoor colonies sit dormant in the frozen and near-frozen soil. That is why true winter ant activity indoors is a red flag: it usually means a colony living inside the heated envelope, either carpenter ants or, in the right building, pharaoh ants.

In April and May, as the ground thaws and warms, colonies wake, the queens ramp up egg-laying, and foragers start hunting hard for the protein and sugar the growing brood needs. This is when the first kitchen trails of the year appear and when pavement ants swarm. Spring foraging can be intense precisely because the colony is rebuilding.

Through summer, colonies are at full strength and foraging is heaviest. A stretch of hot, dry weather is a classic trigger for ants to move indoors hunting water, which is why you may suddenly find them at the sink or the pet bowl during a July dry spell. A heavy summer downpour does the opposite by flooding shallow nests and driving ants up into the house for shelter. Either way, mid-summer is peak trail season.

Late summer into early fall often brings a second surge. Colonies are now large, outdoor food is getting scarce, and ants press harder against homes looking for calories before the cold. Where do ants come from around here?

A leaky trap under a farmhouse bathroom sink is exactly the kind of thing that anchors an odorous house ant nest in the wall.

Pharaoh ants are the odd one out because they are not coming from your yard. They are tropical and survive our winters only inside continuously heated buildings. When they appear, they were almost always introduced, often carried in with goods, boxes, or belongings, and they establish in the warm interior. Because of that, they are far more common in apartments, care facilities, and older multi-unit village buildings than in a standalone farmhouse, and controlling them is as much a building-wide problem as a single-unit one.

Signs you have an ant problem

The most obvious sign is the trail itself, a line of ants moving with purpose along a counter edge, a baseboard, a windowsill, or the foundation, because a trail is a chemical scent path the colony has laid between the nest and a food source. Where a trail disappears into a wall, under a baseboard, or through a gap around a pipe tells you the nest direction.

The dirt piles at concrete cracks are the pavement ant signature, small mounds of excavated soil at driveway seams, sidewalk joints, patio edges, and slab-to-foundation gaps. Are ants dangerous?

For the two common species, the risk is low but real. Pavement ants and odorous house ants do not damage the structure of your home, do not sting in any meaningful way, and are not disease vectors in the way a rodent is. The genuine problem is food contamination and nuisance: ants tracking across counters and into sugar, pet food, and open packages, in numbers that can be hard to live with. For most households the calculus is simply that you should not have to share your kitchen with a scent trail of ants, not that anyone is going to get sick.

Pharaoh ants are the exception that deserves respect. Because they forage widely, including into drains, garbage, and, in institutional settings, wounds and medical materials, they can mechanically carry bacteria such as Salmonella and other pathogens. In a home they are still primarily a contamination pest, but they are the one nuisance ant where the health angle is more than theoretical.

It is worth repeating the distinction that trips people up: if you are worried about ants damaging your house, the ant you are worried about is the carpenter ant, which excavates galleries in moisture-softened wood. None of the three nuisance species here do that.

On the exterior, pull the harborage back off the house. Keep mulch, landscape timbers, stacked firewood, and stone borders a foot or more away from the foundation rather than piled against it, since those are prime outdoor nest sites for odorous house ants. Trim shrubs and tree limbs off the siding and roof so ants cannot bridge in, and address heavy aphid infestations on yard trees, because the honeydew is a major food source pulling odorous house ants toward your property.

Then close the entry points. Ants exploit the gaps around door thresholds and garage doors, the penetrations where water lines, gas lines, cables, and dryer vents pass through the wall, gaps around window and door frames, and the seam where the sill plate meets the foundation. Sealing those with appropriate caulk, foam, and weatherstripping cuts off the highways they use.
