What earwigs are
The dark, flattened, fast-moving insect with a pair of forceps sticking out of its back end — the one you find under a flowerpot, or scurrying across the bathroom floor at night — is an earwig. In Northeast Wisconsin the one you’re almost certainly looking at is the European earwig, Forficula auricularia, an introduced species that has become the common earwig across the northern United States. It’s one of the most recognizable and most misunderstood insects people find around the home.
Let’s clear the misunderstanding first, because it colors everything: earwigs do not crawl into ears, do not burrow into people, and do not lay eggs in your head. The name is centuries old and the folklore attached to it is simply false. Earwigs are damp-soil insects that feed on plants and decaying matter, and the fearsome-looking pincers — properly called cerci or forceps — are used for defense and for grappling with other earwigs, not for attacking anything our size. A big one can give a harmless little pinch if you grab it. That’s the extent of the threat.
The useful way to think about an earwig in your house is as an outdoor insect that wandered in. Earwigs live in the damp band of mulch and soil right against your foundation, and they come inside at ground level when the weather pushes them to — a hot, dry spell that dries out their habitat, or the fall drop in temperature that sends them looking for winter shelter. They don’t breed indoors, they don’t damage the house, and there’s usually nothing inside for them to eat. They’re a nuisance invader tied to foundation moisture, which is exactly why the fix lives outside, around the base of the house, not in a can of spray under the sink.
How do you identify earwigs?
European earwigs are easy to identify once you’ve seen the forceps. The body is about half an inch to five-eighths of an inch long, slender and flattened, and colored a shiny dark reddish-brown. The standout feature is the pair of forceps (pincers) at the rear — curved and stout in males, straighter and thinner in females. That difference is the reliable way to sex them, and the male’s more dramatic curved pincers are what people picture when they think “earwig.”
They have short leathery front wings and functional hind wings folded underneath, though they rarely fly and mostly get around by crawling — quickly. They move with a fast, low scuttle and head straight for a crack or dark cover when disturbed or exposed to light. The threadlike antennae are moderately long, about half the body length.
Don’t mistake anything else for them; the rear forceps are unique among common household insects, so an earwig is one of the few bugs that’s essentially impossible to confuse once you know the mark. The one thing people do get wrong is assuming the pincers mean danger — a reasonable-looking assumption that the biology simply doesn’t support. Nymphs look like smaller, paler versions of the adults, with smaller forceps that grow with each molt, so a range of sizes around the foundation usually just means you’re seeing different age classes of the same local population.
How do earwigs live and breed in Wisconsin?
The European earwig’s life cycle is unusual among insects for one reason that matters to homeowners: the mother cares for her young, and the whole cycle is anchored in damp soil. Understanding it explains both when you see them and why they cluster where they do.
Earwigs overwinter as adults in the soil, typically as mated pairs in a small chamber a few inches down, below the frost. In late winter into spring, the female lays a clutch of several dozen eggs in that underground chamber, and here’s the notable part: she guards and tends them. She cleans the eggs to prevent mold, moves them if conditions change, and stays with the first-instar nymphs after they hatch — a level of maternal care that’s rare in insects and that makes earwigs relatively successful colonizers of a damp niche. This is why a favorable damp spring can produce a big local population: protected broods survive at a high rate.
The nymphs go through several molts through late spring and summer, staying near the ground and the damp cover they need, and reach adulthood by mid to late summer. In our climate there’s generally one generation per year. Throughout, moisture is the non-negotiable requirement — earwigs lose water quickly and will die in dry conditions, so their entire behavior is organized around finding and staying in damp, dark, sheltered microhabitats: under mulch, leaf litter, boards, stones, and in the moist soil against foundations. They’re nocturnal, feeding at night and hiding by day.
That water dependence is the key to their pest behavior. When the damp habitat they need dries out in a summer hot spell, the whole local population moves toward the nearest reliable moisture and shade — very often the base of a house — and that’s when they press indoors. It’s not an invasion in the sense of colonization; it’s a moisture-driven migration by an insect that can’t tolerate drying out.
There’s one more route indoors worth knowing about, because it catches people off guard: earwigs frequently get carried inside in things brought from the yard or garden. A potted plant that’s been sitting outdoors, a flat of vegetables or cut flowers, a bundle of firewood, a cardboard box stored in a damp garage — all can harbor earwigs that then wander loose in the house. So a few earwigs turning up indoors doesn’t always mean they marched in under the door; sometimes you brought them in without knowing it, which is worth keeping in mind when you’re hunting for how they got there.
When are earwigs active in Northeast Wisconsin?
Earwig pressure in Northeast Wisconsin follows a fairly predictable arc, and it’s driven by the interplay of moisture and temperature.
Spring is when the overwintered adults become active and the females are tending eggs and young underground. You won’t see many indoors yet, but the population that will bother you later is being set up now — and a wet spring is what makes for a heavy earwig summer, because it lets a big brood survive. Early summer brings the nymphs to the surface and into the mulch beds and gardens; this is when gardeners start noticing ragged holes chewed in leaves and flowers overnight. Mid to late summer is peak indoor-intrusion season, and the trigger is usually a hot, dry stretch. When the mulch and topsoil dry out, the earwigs that have been living in it move to the cool, damp base of the house and start slipping in under doors and through ground-level gaps. Homeowners tend to see the most earwigs indoors in July and August, especially after a dry week following a wet stretch.
Fall brings a second, smaller push as temperatures drop and the adults look for overwintering shelter; some end up in crawlspaces, basements, and wall voids, part of the same general fall movement toward warm structures that this whole region sees. By the time hard cold sets in, the survivors have gone back down into the soil to overwinter as pairs, and indoor sightings taper off. Through winter you’ll rarely see one; they’re dormant in the ground below the frost line.
The pattern to take from this: earwig years and earwig weeks are set by moisture. A moist spring builds the population; a dry summer spell drives it against your house; and the two together are what turn a background insect into a foundation nuisance.
What conditions bring earwigs to a property here?
Here’s where the Clintonville area’s landscaping and building patterns come in, because earwigs are drawn to the exact features common on older Northeast and Central Wisconsin properties.
Mulch beds against the foundation are the number-one driver. Decorative bark and wood-chip mulch piled thick against the base of a house holds moisture, stays cool and dark, and gives earwigs a perfect daytime refuge inches from the wall. The more mulch and the closer it sits to the foundation, the heavier the earwig harborage. Leaf litter, ground-cover plantings, and dense shrubbery against the house do the same thing — mature landscaping on an older home often means a continuous damp, shaded band around the whole foundation.
Poor drainage compounds it. Grading that slopes toward the house, missing or short downspouts, and gutters that overflow all keep the foundation soil wet, which is precisely what earwigs want. Add the region’s heavy shade from mature trees on established lots, and the soil against many local homes barely dries out all season. Riverside and low-lying properties near the Pigeon, Wolf, and Little Wolf drainages, and lake properties in the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes area, tend to have damp ground and damp foundations as a baseline condition.
The building stock does the rest. Older farmhouses and village homes have block and fieldstone foundations with plenty of low gaps, exterior doors with worn or missing sweeps, and window wells that collect leaves and moisture — all ground-level entry routes. Because the earwig harborage (the mulch and soil) sits right against these entries, the trip from “living in the mulch” to “in the basement” is a few inches. That tight coupling of harborage and entry is what makes earwigs a foundation pest specifically, and it’s why the treatment focuses on that band around the base of the house.
How do you know you have earwigs?
Earwigs are a fairly obvious pest — the main sign is the insect itself — but there are a few patterns worth recognizing:
- The earwigs themselves, indoors at ground level: bathrooms, laundry rooms, under sinks, around basement windows, and in crawlspaces, usually noticed at night or when something damp is moved.
- Clusters under objects near the house. Lift a flowerpot, a board, a piece of landscape edging, or pull back mulch against the foundation, and finding several earwigs underneath confirms a strong local population.
- Garden damage. Ragged, irregular holes chewed in leaves, flower petals, and soft fruits and vegetables overnight — especially on hostas, dahlias, marigolds, and lettuce — point to earwigs feeding after dark.
- A seasonal spike tied to weather. A sudden influx indoors right after a hot, dry stretch (or in early fall) is the classic earwig signature, distinguishing them from pests with steadier, non-weather-driven numbers.
Because earwigs don’t breed or feed indoors, seeing them inside is really a report about conditions outside — a damp, harborage-rich foundation with easy ground-level entry.
Are earwigs dangerous?
The honest assessment: earwigs are almost entirely a nuisance pest, and a fairly benign one at that. Indoors they pose no risk to people or pets. They don’t bite in any meaningful way, they don’t sting, they carry no venom, they don’t transmit disease, and they don’t get into or contaminate stored food. The pinch from a large one’s forceps is harmless and rarely even breaks the skin. And they cause no structural damage — they don’t chew wood, wiring, insulation, fabric, or paper, and they don’t nest in walls. An earwig indoors is a bug that took a wrong turn out of the mulch; it isn’t harming your home or your health while it’s there.
Their only real damage is in the garden, where a big population can chew up ornamental plantings, seedlings, and soft produce overnight. For gardeners that’s a genuine frustration, and it’s worth managing, but it’s a landscape issue rather than a household-health one.
It’s worth adding a note of fairness to the earwig’s reputation, because the garden picture isn’t entirely one-sided. Earwigs are omnivores, and part of their diet is other small insects — including aphids, mites, and insect eggs — so in some settings they do as much good eating garden pests as harm eating plants. Many gardeners never notice earwig feeding at all and only encounter them as the startling bug under a pot. This is why we don’t treat earwigs as an enemy to be eradicated from the landscape; the goal is simply to keep them out of the house and off prized plantings, not to wipe them out of a yard where they’re mostly minding their own business in the mulch.
So the case for control is comfort and volume, not danger. A handful of earwigs is a minor annoyance; a heavy population coming in by the dozens on hot nights, or clustering in a damp basement, is unpleasant enough that most people want it stopped. The good news is that because earwigs are so tightly tied to outdoor moisture and harborage, changing those conditions is a very effective and durable way to bring the numbers down — arguably more so than with pests that breed and live inside.
Why doesn’t DIY work on earwigs?
Homeowners typically go after the earwigs they see indoors with a spray, and it disappoints them for a predictable reason: the earwigs inside are a tiny fraction of a population living in the mulch, leaf litter, and soil around the entire foundation. Killing the ones in the bathroom does nothing about the reservoir outside, which keeps sending in replacements every time the weather drives them toward the house.
Indoor sprays also miss the point that earwigs don’t establish inside — so there’s often nothing indoors to treat in the first place. The action is all at the perimeter, and a homeowner spraying baseboards is treating the wrong location entirely. Even people who do treat outdoors usually spray the visible foundation surface, which breaks down in sun and rain and never reaches the damp harborage where the earwigs actually spend their days.
And the biggest DIY gap is the same as with most damp-loving pests: it ignores the moisture and harborage that are the whole reason the earwigs are massed against the house. Thick mulch against the foundation, poor drainage, and heavy shade will keep producing earwigs no matter how much you spray. Effective control means treating the exterior harborage band properly, cutting the moisture and debris that draw them, and sealing the ground-level entries — a combination that a can of indoor spray was never going to accomplish.

Follow up as needed. Earwig numbers swing with the weather, so if a dry spell drives a fresh push, we re-treat the perimeter. We’d rather be straight that earwig control is about managing a weather-driven outdoor population than promise the weather won’t ever push them at the house again.
How do you keep earwigs out?
Preventing earwigs is a matter of drying and clearing the foundation band and closing the doors. The practical steps:
Pull moisture and harborage away from the house. Keep mulch beds thin and hold them back several inches to a foot from the foundation, leaving a dry gap of bare soil or stone at the base of the wall. Rake up leaf litter, remove boards, stones, and debris sitting against the house, and trim back dense ground cover and shrubbery so the soil can dry and air can move.
Fix drainage. Clean and extend gutters and downspouts to discharge well away from the foundation, and correct grading that slopes toward the house. Keeping the foundation soil drier is the single most effective long-term earwig deterrent, because it removes the moisture the whole population depends on.
Reduce indoor dampness. In basements, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and crawlspaces, run a dehumidifier, fix plumbing leaks, and ventilate, so that any earwig that does get in finds the inside as inhospitable as a dry outdoors would be.
Seal the ground-level entries. Install and maintain tight door sweeps, seal gaps around basement windows and repair window-well drainage, caulk foundation cracks and utility penetrations, and repair damaged screens. Because earwigs enter low and don’t need much of a gap, the low perimeter is where sealing pays off.
Do those things and you break the tight link between the damp foundation harborage and the inside of the house — the earwig population outside shrinks for lack of moisture, and the ones that remain can’t get in.
