The call that starts at sunset
Almost every flying squirrel job begins the same way. Somebody rings up and says there is something in the attic, and that the strange part is when — it is quiet all day, and then right around sunset it comes alive. Scampering. Light, quick footfalls. Soft thumps, like something landing. And it carries on, on and off, all night.
That timing is the whole diagnosis. Gray squirrels and red squirrels are daytime animals; if you have those, the attic is noisy in the morning and quiet after dark. Mice run at night but sound like mice — scratching and gnawing in the walls, not scampering across the joists. An animal that switches on within minutes of sunset, moves with weight and speed across the attic floor, and switches off around dawn is a northern flying squirrel, and in this part of Wisconsin it is very rarely anything else.
The second thing people are unprepared for is the number. This is not one animal that got in. Flying squirrels den communally through the winter, and twenty to thirty in a single attic is an ordinary finding here, not an extreme one.
What a flying squirrel actually is
Glaucomys sabrinus, the northern flying squirrel, is a small nocturnal tree squirrel — noticeably smaller than a gray squirrel, with dense silky grayish-brown fur, a conspicuously flattened tail, and enormous dark eyes. Those eyes are the adaptation that gives it away as a creature of the dark. Northeast Wisconsin sits in northern flying squirrel country, with the smaller southern flying squirrel possible toward the southern end of the range.
It does not fly. Between its wrists and ankles runs a loose fold of furred skin, the patagium. Launching from a high branch, the animal spreads all four limbs, the membrane pulls taut into an aerofoil, and it glides — a controlled descent that can cover well over a hundred feet, steered by shifting the limbs and braked by flaring the tail at the last moment before it lands, usually low on a tree trunk, and scurries upward to launch again.
Two consequences follow directly from that, and they shape everything about how these animals become a building problem.
They arrive by air. A flying squirrel does not need a branch touching your roof, a wall to climb, or a route along the ground. It launches from a tall tree within a hundred feet or so and lands on your roof. Trimming branches back — the standard and genuinely useful advice for gray squirrels — helps far less here. You cannot deny a flying squirrel access to your roof. You can only deny it access through your roof.
They are small. An adult weighs a fraction of what a gray squirrel does and needs an opening around an inch and a half across — about a golf ball. That is why a house with no history of squirrel trouble can quietly host a colony for years. The defects flying squirrels use are the small ones: the corner where a soffit returns into a fascia, a gap behind a gutter, a lifted shingle at a valley, a gable vent with a corner of screen pulled loose, the seam where a dormer meets the main roof.
Why the colony matters so much
Gray squirrel work is usually one female and a litter. Flying squirrel work is a group, and that changes the entire approach.
Flying squirrels are genuinely social, and in winter that sociality becomes a survival strategy. A cluster of animals huddled together in an insulated cavity loses far less heat than each would alone, and in a Wisconsin January that is the difference between surviving the cold snap and not. So through the winter they aggregate, and a warm dry attic full of insulation is, from a flying squirrel’s point of view, an outstanding piece of real estate.
Practical implications:
Trapping a few solves nothing. Take five out of twenty-five and you still have twenty, and the customer still has noise every night. This is the most common way a flying squirrel job goes wrong.
The damage concentrates. Twenty animals using established latrine areas produce heavily saturated patches of insulation, with urine soaking through to the ceiling drywall.
Re-occupation is fast. An attic that housed a colony carries strong residual scent, which advertises the site to any flying squirrel gliding past. Leave the hole open and it refills.
The whole colony has to come out at once. Which is exactly what a properly executed one-way door does and what trapping does not.
The Wisconsin season, month by month
October through March is peak occupancy. Cold weather drives aggregation, the colony consolidates in the warmest available cavity, and this is when the great majority of calls come in — someone lying awake in January listening to the ceiling.
Spring brings the first of two breeding periods. The winter group loosens somewhat as females separate to raise litters, but the site stays in use. Dependent young may be present, and that constrains what can responsibly be done.
Summer is quieter and often mistaken for the problem resolving itself. It has not. The animals are simply more dispersed and less audible, and there is a second breeding period in late summer.
Autumn is the best window for exclusion work. Any young from the late-summer litter are mobile, the winter aggregation has not fully formed, and the work gets done before cold weather turns a minor annoyance into a full colony overhead.
Where the problems are around here
Flying squirrels are far more common across northern Wisconsin than almost anyone realizes, for the simple reason that they are strictly nocturnal and virtually nobody ever sees one. The population is out there in the woods regardless. You find out about it when a colony chooses your building.
The properties that get them share one feature — mature trees close to the structure:
- Homes backed onto hardwood stands, which describes a great deal of the rural corridor
- Cabins and seasonal properties in timber around Iola, Manawa, and the Chain O’ Lakes
- Farmsteads with old windbreaks and mature oaks, maples, and basswood near the house
- Village-edge homes in Clintonville, Marion, Tigerton, and Embarrass where the woods run up close
- Any building with a complicated roofline — dormers, valleys, multiple soffit returns — near woods
Seasonal properties are especially vulnerable. A cabin sitting empty from October to May is a quiet, undisturbed, well-insulated cavity in the middle of good habitat, and nobody is there to hear the first winter’s worth of scampering. Owners routinely arrive in spring to a colony well established and a great deal of soiled insulation.
Signs of a flying squirrel colony
- Noise starting within minutes of sunset, running through the night, stopping near dawn — the single most reliable indicator
- Light, fast scampering and soft thumping rather than heavy rolling or loud gnawing
- Animals seen gliding against a lit sky at twilight near the roofline
- Concentrated latrine areas in the attic with dark, saturated insulation
- Staining on ceiling drywall below the attic
- Nesting material gathered into insulated cavities, often shredded insulation itself
- Chewed openings at soffit corners, gable vents, fascia returns, and roof junctions
- Droppings smaller than a gray squirrel’s, concentrated rather than scattered
- Sudden onset of unexplained itchy bites in rooms below, which usually means parasites dispersing after the colony moved or was disturbed
The risks
Insulation and building damage. This is the main cost. Concentrated urine and droppings saturate insulation, destroy its thermal value, and soak into the drywall beneath. On a colony that has wintered twice in the same attic, the affected area can be substantial.
Wiring. Flying squirrels are rodents with continuously growing incisors, and they gnaw. Attic wiring is at risk, with the fire hazard that implies. They tend to do less heavy structural chewing than gray squirrels, but the wiring exposure is real.
Parasites. Fleas, mites, and lice come with the animals. When a colony is removed or abandons a nest, those parasites disperse looking for a host and move down into living space. Biting complaints that begin after an eviction are a well-known pattern and a good argument for doing the cleanup properly rather than stopping at the animal removal.
Air quality. An attic connected to the home’s ventilation, holding accumulated droppings and urine-soaked insulation, is a genuine indoor air concern.
Not aggression. Flying squirrels are not dangerous animals in any direct sense. They are small, shy, and nocturnal, and they have no interest in confrontation. Nobody is being attacked. The problems are structural, sanitary, and — for anyone trying to sleep under them — acoustic.
Why doesn’t DIY work on flying squirrels?
Underestimating the count. Somebody traps four animals, the noise drops for a week, and then it is back. Because there were twenty-two.
Missing the entry point. These holes are small and often tucked into architectural detail — the underside of a soffit return, behind a gutter, up in a valley. People inspect from the ground, find nothing, and conclude the animals are getting in somewhere impossible.
Sealing the hole with animals inside. The most damaging mistake. Trapped flying squirrels will chew hard to get out, doing real damage in the process, and any that fail to escape die in the structure — which produces odor and a fly problem in your ceiling.
Evicting over dependent young. Seal out the adults during a breeding period and non-mobile juveniles starve in the attic. Inhumane, and it creates the same odor problem.
Trimming branches and expecting results. Sound advice for gray squirrels, largely beside the point for an animal that arrives by air.
Repellents and ultrasonics. Neither moves an established colony out of a prime overwintering cavity. Animals habituate to noise and light within days, and there is nothing on a shelf that competes with the value of a warm, dry, insulated attic in a Wisconsin winter.
Stopping at the animals. Removal without cleanup leaves the contaminated insulation, the parasites, and the scent that advertises the site to the next glider.
How does BugBoss handle flying squirrels?
1. Confirm the species by timing. Standing outside at dusk and watching the roofline is often all it takes. Flying squirrel emergence is tightly synchronized, so the animals show us the exit themselves within minutes of sunset. That single observation identifies the species and locates the primary entry.
2. Full roofline and attic inspection. Every soffit return, fascia junction, gable vent, valley, dormer intersection, gutter line, and roof penetration. Then the attic itself — latrine areas, nesting sites, insulation condition, wiring damage, and whether young are present. Small openings mean this has to be methodical.
3. Assess timing against breeding. If there are dependent young, we plan around them. That may mean waiting until the juveniles are mobile, or hand-removing a nest for reunification. Sealing a mother out from her litter is not something we do.
4. Seal everything except one exit. All secondary openings closed with materials that hold up to rodent chewing — heavy-gauge hardware cloth, metal flashing, structural repair where the wood is gone. Not foam, not screening, not a patch that looks tidy from the ground.
5. Fit the one-way door. Over the remaining active entry. Animals push out at dusk and cannot get back. Because the whole colony emerges on the same schedule, this clears the group in a matter of nights rather than sampling it the way trapping does.
6. Monitor, then close. We verify that emergence has stopped and nothing remains inside before the one-way comes off. Then the final opening is sealed permanently, to the same standard as the rest.
7. Clean up. Contaminated insulation removed, the site treated for parasites and odor, and the residual scent that advertises the attic dealt with. On colony jobs this is frequently the largest part of the work.
8. Come back and check. A follow-up on the seal and the attic. Roofline exclusion is only as good as its weakest point, and a job worth doing is worth verifying.
How do you keep flying squirrels out?
- Treat the roofline as the barrier, not the trees. You cannot stop a flying squirrel reaching your roof. You can stop it getting through.
- Inspect soffit returns and fascia junctions specifically. These are the classic flying squirrel entries and they are easy to overlook because they are small and tucked away.
- Screen gable and roof vents with heavy-gauge hardware cloth, properly fastened. Insect screening does not stop a rodent.
- Keep gutters clear and properly fastened. The gap behind a sagging gutter is a standard route in.
- Repair lifted shingles and flashing at valleys and dormers promptly — the exact places a small animal exploits.
- Check seasonal properties before closing them up each autumn. A cabin that sits empty all winter is a colony waiting to happen, and the inspection takes twenty minutes.
- Deal with it in autumn when you find it. Exclusion is easiest before the winter aggregation forms and after the late-summer young are mobile.
- Do not leave a cleared attic uncleaned. Residual scent is an advertisement.
