Millipedes in Northeast Wisconsin

Millipedes are slow, dark, many-legged arthropods that migrate against Northeast Wisconsin foundations in mass numbers on damp fall nights, then die on basement floors. The morning after

This is one of the more startling things a homeowner in this part of Wisconsin can walk into. You go down to the basement in the first week of October and the floor is scattered with dark coils — dozens of them, maybe hundreds, curled up along the base of the walls and around the floor drain. There were none yesterday.

That is a millipede migration, and the good news arrives quickly: nothing is wrong with your house in any structural sense, the animals are entirely harmless, and they are already dead or dying. What happened is that a very large population living in the lawn thatch, leaf litter, and mulch around your property started moving all at once, and your foundation was in the way.

The other useful thing to know is that this is an event, not an infestation. Millipedes cannot live indoors. The wave passes in anything from a few days to a couple of weeks, and then it is over until next year. The work worth doing is aimed at reducing how many arrive and how many get in — not at the animals already on your floor.

What a millipede is

Millipedes are ancient, slow-moving arthropods — among the first animals to colonise land, and essentially unchanged in body plan for a very long time. The ones we deal with here are typically an inch to an inch and a half long, dark brown to nearly black, and cylindrical in cross-section, with a hard segmented shell.

The defining feature is the legs: two pairs per body segment, which is what separates a millipede from a centipede and what produces that mesmerising rippling wave when one walks. The name promises a thousand feet; the reality for our species is somewhere between thirty and eighty pairs depending on species and age, since millipedes add segments each time they molt.

They are decomposers. Millipedes eat dead leaves, rotting wood, and decaying plant matter, scraping it up with mouthparts that could not break skin if the animal wanted to. Outdoors they are unambiguously useful, doing the work of breaking organic material down into soil.

Their defense is entirely passive. No speed, no bite, no sting — just the ability to coil into a flat spiral, tucking the soft underside and all those legs behind the armored plates of the back. Many species supplement this with a defensive secretion from glands along the body: unpleasant-smelling, mildly irritating to sensitive skin, and capable of staining a light surface. That secretion is the only real reason to sweep or vacuum them rather than crush them.

And they live a surprisingly long time — several years is normal. That longevity is why populations build gradually over seasons, and why the same properties tend to get hit again and again.

Millipede or centipede?

Worth settling, because they mean quite different things.

Millipede: slow, rounded and tube-like, dark, two pairs of short legs per segment, coils into a spiral when disturbed. Eats decaying plants. Arrives in mass numbers in autumn. Harmless.

Centipede: fast — startlingly so — flattened rather than round, one pair of long legs per segment splayed out to the sides, and it runs for cover rather than curling up. A predator that hunts other insects. Shows up as individuals, year-round, wherever it is damp. See the centipedes page.

If it is on the floor and does not move much, it is a millipede. If it crossed the room before you finished registering it, it is a centipede.

The other regular confusion is with sowbugs and pillbugs, which turn up in the same places for the same reasons. Those are gray, much shorter, armored like tiny armadillos, and roll into a ball rather than a flat spiral.

Biology and why they move together

Two facts drive everything.

They must stay damp. Millipedes lose water rapidly through their shell and have very limited ability to conserve it. They live in the moist layer under leaf litter, mulch, thatch, logs, and stones, and they are active mostly at night when humidity is highest. In a heated house they desiccate and die within a day or two — which is precisely why you find them dead.

They move as a population. This is the unusual bit and it is what produces the dramatic events. Under the right combination of triggers — shortening autumn days, cooling temperatures, damp ground — millipedes begin traveling together across the surface at night, sometimes in enormous numbers. Prolonged heavy rain does the same thing at other times of year by flooding their habitat and driving them out. They are looking for overwintering sites or for better conditions, and they move in something close to a front.

A building in the path of that front intercepts a great many animals. They pile against the foundation, work along it, and push through whatever ground-level gaps they find. Once inside, they are on a clock.

Populations build over several seasons in a favorable spot, which is why the property with deep mulch, thick thatch, and permanent leaf litter sees this every year while the neighbour with a gravel strip and clean beds does not.

When are millipedes active in Northeast Wisconsin?

September and October is the main event. This is when the great majority of mass arrivals happen in Northeast Wisconsin, driven by the autumn migration.

Any prolonged heavy rain in the warm months can trigger a secondary movement, sometimes a substantial one, by flooding the habitat.

Spring produces a smaller, quieter movement as animals come out of overwintering, occasionally noticeable during a wet melt.

Summer is quiet at the building. The population is out there breeding and growing, which is what sets up the autumn.

Winter is quiet outdoors. Millipedes overwinter in soil and litter below the frost line. Indoor sightings in midwinter usually mean a damp crawlspace or basement sustaining them, which is a moisture finding worth acting on.

Where do millipedes come from around here?

The population is always close — usually within a few feet of where you are finding the bodies.

Lawn thatch running to the foundation. A thick thatch layer is superb millipede habitat and, where the lawn meets the wall, there is no barrier at all. This is the biggest contributor on most residential properties.

Deep mulch beds against the house. Damp, organic, decomposing — food and shelter in one, directly against the foundation.

Leaf litter. Especially leaves left banked against the foundation over autumn, right when the migration happens.

Boards, stones, and landscape timbers lying on soil near the house, each creating a damp harborage underneath.

Compost heaps and garden beds close to the building.

Wooded lots and heavy tree cover, which is much of our service area — abundant leaf fall means abundant millipedes.

Window wells, which collect debris, hold moisture, trap arrivals, and sit right next to a basement window.

Shaded north and east sides, which stay damp longest and see the heaviest arrivals.

How do you know you have millipedes?

  • Dozens or hundreds of coiled dark millipedes on basement or garage floors, appearing suddenly
  • Mass movement visible across driveways, patios, and walls on damp autumn nights
  • Accumulations in window wells
  • Concentrations along the base of foundation walls, around floor drains, and at thresholds
  • Heavy thatch, deep mulch, or leaf litter banked against the foundation
  • Activity concentrated on the shaded, damper side of the house
  • A faint unpleasant odor where large numbers have died and been crushed
  • Staining on light flooring where they have been stepped on

Are millipedes dangerous?

Very low, and worth putting plainly: millipedes do not bite, sting, transmit disease, damage buildings, chew wood or fabric, or infest food. They are physically incapable of most of what people fear from them.

The defensive secretion is the only real caution. It smells bad, can cause mild irritation or temporary discoloration on sensitive skin, and stains light-colored flooring and fabric. Sweep or vacuum rather than crushing, wash your hands after handling one, and keep an eye on a dog or small child inclined to pick things up — the likely outcome there is a bad taste and some drooling rather than any actual harm.

The nuisance is genuine though, and worth taking seriously as a nuisance. Cleaning up hundreds of dead millipedes repeatedly over a fortnight is unpleasant, and for people who are squeamish about invertebrates it is properly distressing.

And as with every moisture pest, the underlying signal matters: conditions immediately around your foundation are damp and organic enough to support a large population, and there are ground-level gaps into the building. Both feed a wider set of problems — sowbugs, springtails, centipedes, and in the longer run wood rot and the insects that follow it.

Why doesn’t DIY work on millipedes?

Treating inside. The millipedes indoors are already dying. Interior spray adds nothing and puts product where you live for no benefit.

Reacting instead of anticipating. By the time the basement floor is covered, the migration is underway and a treatment applied that day has largely missed its window. Timing is everything with this pest.

Sealing without reducing the habitat. Sealing is worthwhile, but a house standing in the path of a genuine mass migration is under enormous pressure and something will find a way in. Cutting the population near the foundation is what reduces the numbers at the wall.

Ignoring thatch. People address the mulch and overlook the lawn, which on many properties is the larger reservoir.

Missing the window wells. Frequently the single biggest local concentration, and almost always overlooked until someone actually goes and looks in one.

Assuming it will keep getting worse. It will not. Migrations end. The right response is to prepare for next autumn, not to escalate treatment mid-event.

4. Seal at ground level. This is where the work goes. Above waist height is irrelevant for millipedes.

5. Time the perimeter treatment to the season. Late summer into early autumn, before the movement starts, so arrivals contact the treatment at the foundation rather than after they are indoors. On properties with a migration history we schedule this to the calendar rather than waiting for the call — it is a far better use of the money.

6. Lay out the habitat plan. Dethatching, mulch depth and setback, leaf clearance, lifting timbers and boards, window well clearing and covers, downspouts and grading. Specific and prioritized, with a clear line between what we handle and what belongs to a landscaper or an excavator.

7. Book the autumn visit. Millipedes are one of the genuinely predictable pests. A property that got hit last September will very likely be hit again, and treating it as an annual scheduled item rather than an annual emergency works much better.

How do you keep millipedes out?

  • Dethatch the lawn, particularly where it runs up to the foundation. Often the single highest-value item.
  • Create a dry strip of bare soil or gravel 12 to 24 inches wide against the foundation, with mulch pulled back.
  • Keep mulch shallow — two to three inches, not piled.
  • Clear leaf litter from against the house in autumn, before the migration rather than after.
  • Lift boards, stones, and landscape timbers off the soil near the building.
  • Clear and cover window wells and improve their drainage.
  • Extend downspouts well clear and regrade so water falls away from the house.
  • Seal at ground level — foundation cracks, sill plate gaps, garage door seals, thresholds, and basement window seals.
  • Schedule the perimeter treatment for late summer if your property has a history. Anticipating this pest works; reacting to it does not.

Do millipedes bite?

They cannot. A millipede's mouthparts scrape soft decaying plant tissue and are not capable of breaking human skin. There is no millipede in Wisconsin that bites people. What some species do is secrete a defensive chemical from glands along the body, which smells unpleasant, can cause mild irritation or temporary staining on skin, and is more of a concern for a dog or a small child who picks one up and puts it in their mouth. Even then, the result is unpleasant taste and possibly drooling rather than genuine harm.

Will millipedes infest my house?

No. Millipedes need constantly damp conditions and decaying plant matter to eat, and a normal heated house provides neither. They dry out and die within a day or two indoors, which is why you find them dead and coiled on basement floors rather than thriving. They cannot breed indoors either. What looks like an infestation is a large number of arrivals from outside, all dying on schedule. The exception is a chronically wet crawlspace or basement, which can be damp enough to keep them alive — and that is a moisture problem worth solving on its own merits.

Why are they coiled up when I find them?

Coiling is a millipede's entire defense. It has no speed, no bite, and no sting, so when threatened — or when it is drying out and dying — it curls into a flat spiral, protecting the soft underside and legs behind the armored plates of its back. Dead millipedes stay in that curl, which is why the basement floor ends up scattered with what look like small dark coils. A live millipede that has been disturbed will usually uncurl and move off after a minute or two if you leave it alone.

When do millipede migrations happen in Wisconsin?

The main event is autumn, roughly September into October, and it is triggered by a combination of shortening days, cooling temperatures, and damp conditions. Populations peak after a summer of breeding, and then move together looking for overwintering sites. A secondary trigger is prolonged heavy rain at any time in the warm months, which floods their habitat and drives them out onto the surface. Spring can produce a smaller movement as they emerge from overwintering. If your basement fills with millipedes, September and October are overwhelmingly the likeliest months.

Do millipedes damage plants or gardens?

Very rarely, and on balance they are beneficial. Millipedes are decomposers — they break down dead leaves, rotting wood, and decaying plant matter, which is genuinely valuable work in a garden or compost heap. In unusually damp conditions with very large populations they will occasionally feed on seedlings, soft ripe fruit lying on wet soil, and the roots of young plants, but this is a minor and situational problem. Most gardeners are better off with them present than absent, and the fix when they do cause trouble is drainage and mulch depth rather than treatment.

How long do millipedes live?

Considerably longer than most people expect for something so small — several years is normal for many species, with some living longer still. Should I spray inside for millipedes?

Why are they in my window wells?

Window wells collect exactly what millipedes want and then trap them. Leaves and organic debris accumulate, moisture holds, the well is shaded, and an animal that drops in generally cannot climb the smooth sides to get out. So during a migration a well fills up, and there is a basement window right there with a seal that may not be perfect. Clearing debris out of the wells, improving their drainage, and fitting covers is one of the more effective single steps on a house that gets millipedes every autumn.

Is a millipede invasion a sign of something wrong with my house?

Not necessarily wrong, but it is telling you something. A mass arrival during an autumn migration can happen to a perfectly sound house that simply stands in the path. What it does indicate is that the ground immediately around your foundation is damp and organic enough to support a large population, and that there are ground-level gaps letting them in. Neither is an emergency, but both are worth correcting, because the same conditions support sowbugs, springtails, centipedes, and eventually more consequential moisture problems in the structure.
