Big black ants on the deck
You’re out on the deck at dusk with a drink and you start noticing them — big black ants, a quarter to a half inch long, trailing along the railing, disappearing into a seam where two boards meet, coming and going from the base of a post. A few ants on a summer deck is normal. A steady presence, night after night, of large black ants using the same routes into the wood is a different thing: it usually means carpenter ants are nesting in the deck, not just crossing it.
Carpenter ants (Camponotus, most often the black carpenter ant here) are the largest ants in Wisconsin, and they’ve got a well-earned reputation for tunneling wood. But the name misleads people into thinking the ants are eating their deck. They aren’t. Carpenter ants excavate wood — carve smooth galleries into it to house the colony — and haul the shavings back out. Their food is entirely separate: sugars from aphid honeydew, tree sap, and fruit, plus protein from other insects, and whatever sweets and grease they scavenge. The wood is just real estate. That distinction matters, because it tells you what actually draws them and what actually fixes the problem: moisture, not crumbs.
Why a deck is such good carpenter ant habitat
Carpenter ants tunnel most easily in wood that’s been softened by dampness, and a deck or porch is practically engineered to stay damp in the spots that matter. Consider where the water goes:
- Post bases in ground contact wick moisture up from the soil, and the base of a post sitting on or near wet ground is often the first place to soften.
- Poor drainage under the deck keeps the ground and the underside of the framing shaded, humid, and slow to dry.
- Ledger boards — the board bolted to the house that the deck hangs from — trap water against the wall if they aren’t flashed and sealed, softening both the ledger and the rim joist behind it.
- Horizontal surfaces and joints hold rainwater; end grain, board seams, and stair stringers stay wet longer than they should.
Add shade from the house or overhanging trees, a layer of leaf litter that holds moisture, and a few years of weather, and you get slow rot — exactly the punky, softened wood carpenter ants prefer. A brand-new, well-drained, well-flashed deck is a poor target. A ten-year-old deck with ground-contact posts, no drainage, and a leaky ledger is an invitation.
Reading the signs
The two things to look for are frass and swarmers, plus the ants themselves. Frass is the debris carpenter ants push out of their galleries through small openings — it looks like coarse sawdust, but mixed in are bits of insect body parts and dead ants, which distinguishes it from the clean sawdust a saw or drill makes. Find a little pile of it below a post, a joist, a board seam, or a stair stringer and you’ve very likely found an active nest in the wood directly above. Swarmers — winged carpenter ants — are the colony’s reproductive males and new queens, and a colony only produces them once it’s mature, roughly three or four years old. Seeing them in spring around the deck, especially emerging from the wood itself, signals an established colony nearby. And the foragers, most active at dusk, will often lead you back toward the nest if you watch where they consistently go.
Parent nest, satellite nest — why the deck is only part of it
Here’s the piece that trips up most DIY attempts. A carpenter ant colony isn’t a single nest. It keeps a parent nest — with the queen, eggs, and youngest larvae — in a consistently damp spot, and because that parent nest needs high humidity, it’s usually outdoors: in a live tree, a stump, a rotting log, or a woodpile. Once the eggs hatch, workers carry the older larvae off to drier satellite nests, which can be established in all sorts of suitable wood — including your deck framing, and from there, potentially, the wall of the house.
So a nest in your deck is typically a satellite, and the queen may well be out in a stump or tree twenty feet away. Kill the ants you see in the deck and the parent colony just keeps producing more. That’s why effective control means finding both — the satellite in the deck and the parent nest feeding it — and treating the colony at its source. It’s also why a deck colony against the house is worth taking seriously: a satellite in the deck framing, especially where a leaky ledger has softened the rim joist, is a short move from the deck into the adjacent wall or sill of the house. Why this is common around here
The rural Clintonville area is close to ideal carpenter ant country, and decks and porches sit right in the crosshairs. Properties out here tend to have mature trees, woodlots, stumps, and woodpiles — the outdoor damp-wood habitat where parent colonies thrive — within easy foraging distance of the house. Seasonal cabins around the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes are especially prone: they sit in the woods, they’re shaded and humid, their decks see hard weather, and they’re often left unattended for stretches while small leaks and drainage problems quietly soften the wood. Older farmhouses near woodlots and along the rivers have the same setup — nearby outdoor nests plus decks and porches with the moisture problems that invite a satellite.
The season follows the ants’ biology. Foraging runs from spring through late summer, mostly at night, so summer evenings are when a deck colony is most obvious. Swarmers show up in spring, typically May into June, as mature colonies send out reproductives. Come winter the colony goes dormant — but a satellite nested in warm framing against a heated house can stay semi-active, which is why large black ants seen indoors in the dead of winter mean a nest is living in the structure, not foraging in from the cold.
Why DIY spray usually fails
Reaching for a can of ant spray is the natural move, and it’s the one that most reliably disappoints. Surface sprays kill the foragers you see but almost never reach the nest galleries where the colony actually lives, so the colony simply produces more foragers and the problem persists — or seems to move as the ants reroute. Worse, some spraying can cause a colony to bud: split and relocate part of itself, effectively spreading the problem instead of ending it. And even a perfectly aimed treatment on the deck does nothing about the parent nest out in the stump that’s still pumping out workers. Killing carpenter ants for good requires locating the nests and treating the colony at its source, then correcting the moisture — which is a different job than emptying a can along the railing.

Prevention: it’s mostly about keeping the wood dry
Since moisture is the whole game, prevention is really deck maintenance:
- Improve drainage under and around the deck so the ground and framing dry out between rains.
- Keep post bases off wet soil — proper footings and standoffs, not posts sitting in dirt.
- Flash and seal the ledger so it sheds water instead of trapping it against the house and rim joist.
- Clear leaf litter from the deck surface, joints, and the ground beneath, and cut back shading branches so sun and air can dry the wood.
- Replace rotted or punky boards promptly — softened wood is what the ants want.
- Keep firewood off the deck and away from the house, since woodpiles are classic parent-nest sites, and keep tree branches from touching the structure so ants don’t get a bridge.
Sound, dry, well-drained wood, with no easy bridge from an outdoor nest to your deck and walls, is the best long-term defense — and it’s part of every carpenter ant job we do.
