Perfectly Round Holes in My Deck Rail

Half-inch holes drilled dead-round into the underside of a deck rail, fascia or barn board are carpenter bees. One season's damage is cosmetic, but they reuse and extend the same galleries every year — and woodpeckers hear the larvae and tear the board open to reach them, which is usually the expensive part. Why this happens

Carpenter bees want bare, weathered, unfinished softwood, and they want it on the underside of a horizontal surface. That is why the damage turns up where it does: deck rails and joists, fascia and soffit boards, porch ceilings, the bottom edge of window trim, and the exposed rafters and board siding of barns and pole buildings.

The female cuts across the grain for about an inch, then turns and tunnels with the grain, four to six inches for a new gallery. She works slowly, roughly an inch a week, and she does not eat the wood — she chews it out and discards it, which is why you get a heap of coarse sawdust rather than nothing. Inside she builds a row of cells, each stocked with pollen and nectar, each with an egg, each sealed off with chewed wood pulp.

Three things make this worse than it first looks.

They overwinter in the galleries. The adults do not die off in autumn; they retreat into the existing tunnels and wait out the winter. The holes in your deck are not just last year’s damage — they are next year’s housing.

They extend rather than start fresh. Given the choice, a female reuses and lengthens an existing gallery. That is how a board accumulates two feet of branching tunnel over a decade.

Woodpeckers follow. They hear the larvae and open the wood up to eat them, turning neat holes into ragged trenches. This is normally the expensive half of the damage.

The rural corridor is exceptionally good habitat for exactly one reason: there is an enormous amount of unpainted softwood on outbuildings that nobody finishes. Barns, machine sheds, pole buildings, lean-tos, cabins, and grayed cedar decks all qualify.

What to do now

Get underneath and look up. Searching from above misses nearly everything. Take a torch along the underside of rails, joists, fascia and rafters and count the holes — there are usually more than the two you noticed from the deck.

Note whether there is fresh sawdust. That tells you which galleries are active this season.

Do not plug anything yet. Sealing before treatment traps live bees and larvae, and they chew out somewhere new.

Do not bother swatting the hovering bee. He is the male, he has no stinger, and he was never the one drilling.

Look for woodpecker damage. If a bird has started working the same board, the problem has escalated and the timeline is shorter.

When to call

Call in late spring, when the fresh sawdust appears and the hovering starts. That is the treatment window, and hitting it means one visit instead of a season of watching holes multiply.

Call if woodpeckers have started on the same area — that means larvae in the wood and it gets worse quickly.

Call if you have a barn, shed or pole building with years of accumulated holes and you want a realistic plan rather than a losing fight with a spray can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will they sting me?

Barely. The bee doing the aggressive hovering and dive-bombing at your head is the male, and males have no stinger at all — the entire performance is bluff. The female can sting but is genuinely reluctant to, spends most of her time inside the gallery, and generally has to be grabbed or trodden on first. Compared with yellowjackets or bald-faced hornets, carpenter bees are a very low stinging risk. It is the wood damage that justifies dealing with them, not the danger.

How do I know it's carpenter bees and not something else?

The hole is unmistakable and nothing else in Wisconsin makes one like it — almost exactly half an inch across and remarkably, precisely circular, so people routinely describe it as looking machine-drilled. Look on the underside of horizontal boards, because that is overwhelmingly where they drill. You will also see coarse pale sawdust below the hole if it is active this season, and yellowish-brown staining streaking down the wood from the entrance.

Is it a bumble bee?

Check the abdomen — the rear section. A carpenter bee's is shiny, black and essentially hairless, like polished plastic. A bumble bee's is densely furry, usually with yellow banding. They are close enough in size and general shape that almost everyone assumes bumble bee at first, but once you know to look at the bare shiny rear you will never confuse them again. Behavior helps too: carpenter bees hover territorially in one spot near a structure, bumble bees work flowers and nest in the ground.

How much damage will they actually do?

One bee in one season is cosmetic — a round entry and a gallery running four to six inches into the wood. The problem is compounding. Carpenter bees overwinter inside the old galleries and come back, and each female tends to extend an existing tunnel rather than start fresh, so after a decade the same fascia board or barn rafter can hold branching galleries running a couple of feet. That genuinely weakens the member, and the open holes let water in, which starts rot.

Why is a woodpecker attacking the same spot?

Because it can hear the larvae. Carpenter bee grubs develop in cells inside the gallery and make audible sounds as they feed, and downy and hairy woodpeckers locate them and chisel the wood open to get at them. A tidy half-inch hole becomes a ragged trench several inches long, or a row of them down a fascia board. On most carpenter bee jobs I attend, the woodpecker excavation costs more to repair than anything the bees did.

Can I just fill the holes with caulk?

Not on its own, and not with caulk. Sealing an untreated gallery traps live bees and developing larvae inside, and they are perfectly capable of chewing out through soft filler or cutting a fresh exit an inch away. Plugging is the last step, after treatment has taken effect — and it wants a hardwood dowel set in exterior glue, or a solid exterior-grade wood filler. Caulk stays soft, weathers badly and gets chewed through.

When is the right time to deal with them?

Late spring, as the bees become active and are moving in and out of the galleries, so they contact the treatment at the entrance. Then plug after it has worked, then finish the wood. The sequence matters more than people expect and getting it backwards is the most common mistake — seal too early and you trap live bees, treat without plugging and next year's generation reuses the same tunnels, plug without finishing and the bare board is just as attractive next May.

Will painting stop them coming back?

It is the most effective long-term prevention there is, though not absolute. Carpenter bees strongly prefer bare or weathered softwood, and a well-maintained painted surface deters them substantially. Solid-color paint works considerably better than stain, and stain better than nothing — but only while the finish is intact, so the deterrent fades as it weathers and chalks. Treat and plug the existing holes before you finish, otherwise you are painting over an active gallery.

There are a dozen holes in one barn board. Is that a colony?

No — carpenter bees are solitary. Each female excavates and provisions her own gallery, which is quite different from honey bees or hornets. What you are looking at is many individual females independently deciding that one board is good wood. That is common on barns, pole buildings and machine sheds, where large expanses of bare weathered softwood on horizontal undersides are exactly what they want and nobody ever paints them.

Should I bother if it's only two or three holes?

Usually yes, because this compounds. Two or three holes is the cheapest, easiest point to intervene — treat, plug, finish the wood and you are done. Left alone, those galleries get reused and extended, more females are drawn to a board that has clearly worked, and eventually the woodpeckers arrive. Small carpenter bee problems are genuinely easy to solve. A barn with forty years of accumulation is a project.
