Ridges, mounds, and an animal you never see
Mole damage announces itself without ever showing you the animal. One week the lawn is fine; the next there are raised ridges snaking across the turf where the ground has been heaved up from below, and here and there a volcano-shaped mound of loose soil pushed up out of a deeper tunnel. Step on a ridge and it gives — there’s a hollow run right under the surface. The grass over the tunnels yellows and dries because its roots have been lifted away from the soil. And through all of it, you never spot the culprit, because a mole lives its entire life underground.
That invisibility is the first thing to understand, because it drives most of the frustration. People buy poison, jab in sonic spikes, and flood tunnels for weeks without ever confronting the thing doing the damage — and the ridges keep coming. The mole isn’t hard to beat once you understand what it is and what it’s actually doing down there.
What the mole is doing, and what it isn’t
A mole is not a rodent and it is not eating your lawn. It’s an insectivore — a tunneling predator whose diet is earthworms, white grubs, and other soil invertebrates. It doesn’t touch grass, roots, bulbs, or garden plants. All that turf damage is purely mechanical: the mole shoulders through the top few inches of soil hunting prey, and its network of feeding tunnels heaves the sod, severs some roots, and leaves the ridges and mounds you see. A mole’s front end is a digging machine, and it can turn over an astonishing amount of ground in a night when the soil is soft and worm-rich.
This changes the whole strategy. Because the mole eats live, moving prey and ignores stationary food, the poison “peanuts” sold for it — formulated for seed-gnawing rodents — are simply the wrong tool for the wrong animal. And because earthworms carpet Wisconsin soil, you can’t starve a mole out by killing grubs alone. The animal isn’t drawn by anything you can easily remove; it’s drawn by a lawn full of worms, which is most healthy lawns here.
Mole, vole, or grub? Get the diagnosis right first
Half of solving this is naming it correctly, because three different problems get lumped together and each needs a different response.
- Moles heave the turf into ridges and push up soil mounds; the animal stays underground; plants aren’t eaten. Damage is structural to the turf.
- Voles are small surface-dwelling rodents that do eat plants. They leave narrow runways worn into the grass, gnaw bark at the base of shrubs and trees, and chew roots and bulbs. If your plantings are being eaten, this is your animal, not a mole.
- Grubs are beetle larvae that chew grass roots directly, leaving spongy turf that peels back like carpet and irregular brown patches — and their presence can also attract skunks and raccoons digging for them.
It’s common to have more than one at once — a grub-heavy lawn feeds both moles and the skunks tearing cone-shaped divots looking for the same grubs. Sorting out which is doing what is the first thing we settle on an inspection, because trapping moles won’t fix a vole problem and grub control won’t reliably evict a mole.
Why our lawns are prime mole ground
Moles thrive in moist, well-drained, earthworm-rich soil, and that describes a great deal of the managed turf around Clintonville and the lake communities. Watered lawns, old pasture converted to yard, garden beds, and the fertile glacial soils of this region all carry heavy earthworm populations — the mole’s staple food. Properties that back onto woods, fields, or fencerows sit against a reservoir of moles ready to move into good foraging ground. A mole’s network is mostly exploratory — one-time probing runs it never revisits — with a few main travel and feeding tunnels it patrols repeatedly. Set a trap on a dead run and nothing happens, which is exactly why so much DIY trapping fails.
The method is to find the live runs first. We tamp down sections of the surface ridges and mark them, then come back the next day to see which have been pushed back up — those repaired runs are active. The straight, deeper travel tunnels that connect feeding areas are the other reliable set locations. Traps go on those confirmed runs, positioned and set correctly for the tunnel type, and checked and adjusted until the resident moles are removed. Because moles are solitary and territorial, a yard that looks overrun is often just one or two animals covering a lot of ground — so removing the residents genuinely stops the damage, rather than being an endless battle.
Repellents and grub control have supporting roles. Castor-oil products can make soil temporarily less palatable and nudge a mole to shift, and cutting a heavy grub load helps where grubs are also damaging the turf — but neither reliably evicts an established mole on its own. Trapping does.
