What’s happening when stink bugs show up inside
If you’re finding fat, shield-shaped brown bugs clinging to the curtains, bumbling across the ceiling, or lined up on the inside of a sunny window in October — or worse, in February — you’ve got brown marmorated stink bugs (Halyomorpha halys) doing exactly what they’re built to do. They aren’t nesting, breeding, or feeding in your house. They’re squatting. Like the cluster flies, boxelder bugs, and Asian lady beetles that Wisconsin homeowners know all too well, the stink bug is a fall invader: an insect that spends the growing season outdoors and then, as days shorten and nights cool, goes looking for a protected, dry, above-freezing place to wait out winter in a dormant state called diapause.
In their native range and out in the fields, that place would be under bark or in a rock crevice. But your house — warm, dry, full of the cracks and cavities they favor — is a better rock crevice than anything nature offers. So in September and October, when the first cool nights hit, they gather on the sun-warmed south and west walls of the building in the afternoon and probe every gap they can find: behind fascia and soffit returns, around window frames, at utility penetrations, under loose siding. The ones that make it inside settle into wall voids, attics, and cold closets and go quiet. You may not see them at all through the depths of winter. Then a warm, bright day in late winter or a blast of furnace heat against a wall void wakes a few, they mistake it for spring, and they blunder toward light — into your living room instead of the great outdoors.
Identifying the bug — and why it’s mostly harmless indoors
The brown marmorated stink bug is easy to pick out once you know it. It’s roughly half an inch long, shaped like a rounded shield or a heraldic crest, and colored a mottled, marbled gray-brown — “marmorated” literally means marbled. The two features that separate it from the native stink bugs Wisconsin has always had are the alternating white bands on the last two antennal segments and the smooth, rounded shoulders (native brown stink bugs tend to have a more toothed or pointed shoulder edge, and no white antennal bands). Flip one over or look at the edge of the abdomen and you’ll see alternating dark-and-light banding there too.
Here’s the reassuring part: indoors, this bug is a nuisance and nothing more. It does not bite or sting, it carries no disease, it won’t chew your woodwork or your wool sweaters, and it won’t lay eggs in your pantry or your walls. It can’t even reproduce indoors — the overwintering adults are shut down for the season. The one genuine downside is the smell. Stink bugs carry scent glands on the underside of the thorax, and when they’re alarmed, squished, or vacuumed up, they release a rank, oily, cilantro-meets-old-gym-sock odor that lingers and can stain light-colored fabric. That single fact drives the whole strategy for dealing with them indoors: do not crush them.
The real damage this species does is agricultural and happens far from your living room. Outdoors, brown marmorated stink bugs feed on a huge range of crops — apples, sweet corn, soybeans, peppers, tree fruit — piercing the plant and leaving corky, deformed damage. That’s why entomologists at UW and the state ag department track its spread so closely. For a homeowner, though, the concern is simply keeping them out of the house.
Why northeast Wisconsin gets them
This is a relatively new problem here, and it’s getting worse, which is why so many people don’t recognize the bug. Brown marmorated stink bugs are an invasive species from East Asia, first detected in the United States around Allentown, Pennsylvania in the late 1990s, and first confirmed in Wisconsin about 2010. They established first in the warmer southern counties — Dane, Milwaukee, Rock — and have been marching north and east ever since, aided by their habit of hitchhiking in vehicles, freight, firewood, and moving boxes. The rural stretch of Waupaca, Shawano, and Outagamie counties that BugBoss covers is now firmly inside the expanding range.
The local building stock does them a lot of favors. The older farmhouses, mid-century village homes, and seasonal cabins around Clintonville tend to have exactly the features a stink bug exploits: soffit and fascia gaps, unsealed sill plates, wood siding that has cupped or pulled loose, single-pane and older double-hung windows with worn weatherstripping, and stone or block foundations with mortar cracks. A tight, new, well-sealed house rarely has a serious stink bug problem. An 1890s farmhouse with balloon framing and a dozen small gaps at the roofline is an open invitation. Add the sun exposure of a farm sitting out in the open — long, warm afternoons on a south or west wall in early fall — and you have the ideal staging ground for a mass entry.
The aggregation behavior compounds it year to year. As they settle in for winter, overwintering stink bugs give off a chemical signal — an aggregation pheromone — that tells other bugs this is a good spot. A house that let them in one October smells, to a stink bug, like a recommended hotel the next October. Left unaddressed, the annual numbers tend to climb.
The real fix: outside, not inside
The instinct is to reach for a can of spray and hit the bugs on the window, or to have the inside of the house treated. Neither works well, and here’s why. By the time you’re seeing bugs indoors, the population is dispersed deep in wall voids and attic spaces where interior sprays can’t reach, and killing bugs inside a void just leaves decaying insects that can attract secondary pests like carpet beetles. The bugs you see are a small, visible fraction of what’s tucked away.
The approach that actually reduces the problem has two parts, and both happen on the outside of the building.
First, exclusion — physically closing the routes in. This is the permanent part of the fix and it pays off against every fall invader at once. It means sealing gaps around window and door frames with quality caulk, screening or sealing attic and gable vents, closing gaps where utility lines, cables, and pipes pass through exterior walls, repairing or replacing worn weatherstripping, screening the chimney, and tightening up soffit and fascia gaps at the roofline. Damaged screens on windows and crawlspace vents get fixed. It’s tedious, detail work, but a house that’s sealed against stink bugs is also sealed against mice, cluster flies, and lady beetles.
Second, timing. The single most effective intervention is a residual exterior perimeter treatment applied in late summer to early fall — roughly late August through September in this climate — to the walls, eaves, foundation, and around entry points, before the bugs cluster and slip inside. Applied at the right moment, it intercepts them as they gather on the siding. Applied in December, it does almost nothing, because the bugs are already in the walls. Timing is everything with fall invaders, and it’s the piece homeowners most often get wrong.

Walk the outside of the house and seal what you find: caulk window and door frames, close utility penetrations, fix screens, replace failed weatherstripping, and screen vents and the chimney. At the roofline, tighten soffit and fascia gaps — the same openings that let stink bugs, cluster flies, and lady beetles in are usually the ones that matter most on an older home. Then schedule the exterior treatment for late summer, before the first cool nights send the bugs to the walls. Do those two things and the annual stink bug show at your windows gets smaller instead of bigger.
