The slow flies at the glass
You notice them on a mild afternoon in October. A dozen, then more, sluggish dark flies bumping the inside of the windows, drifting toward the light, too slow to be house flies and showing up long after the summer fly season should be over. You kill them, and the next warm day there are more. Then winter comes and they vanish — until a bright day in February, when they’re suddenly back at the same windows, crawling on the glass as if spring had arrived. It hasn’t.
These are cluster flies, and the window is only where you meet them. The real story is happening in your walls and out in your yard, and once you understand that, the reason spraying the window never works becomes obvious.
Where they actually come from
Here’s the fact that reframes everything: cluster fly larvae are parasites of earthworms. The adult female lays her eggs in the soil, the larvae find and burrow into earthworms, develop inside them, and emerge as new adults — a couple of generations over a summer. The reservoir isn’t your kitchen or your garbage. It’s the ground around your house — the lawn, the pasture, the garden, the field — wherever earthworms live, which in this part of Wisconsin is nearly everywhere.
That’s why a brand-new, immaculate farmhouse ringed by five acres of lawn gets cluster flies while a messy house on a paved lot in town often doesn’t. Sanitation has nothing to do with it. The size of your fly problem tracks the earthworm habitat surrounding the building, and around Clintonville — river-and-farm country, lawns and fields on every side — that habitat is abundant.
The behavior that puts them at your window
Cluster flies don’t come indoors to breed or feed. They come in to overwinter. As fall nights cool and daylight shortens, the summer’s flies stop reproducing and start hunting for a warm, dry place to wait out the cold. They orient to the biggest, warmest, most prominent object on the landscape — your house — and pile onto its sun-warmed south and west walls on fall afternoons, probing every crack for a way in.
The ones that find a gap slip into the wall voids and attic and settle into dormancy. And that’s where they’d stay, invisible, except for one flaw in the plan: they can’t tell a false warm spell from real spring. When a sunny winter day heats the wall cavities, they wake, assume it’s time to leave, and crawl toward light — which means the interior side of the wall, the windows, the light fixtures. That’s the February comeback. It isn’t a new infestation; it’s the fall crowd, still in the walls, waking up in batches.
In the older homes common here, balloon framing makes it worse: the wall cavities run uninterrupted from the sill plate to the attic, so a fly that entered near the foundation can appear at an upstairs window months later. Why indoor spray is the wrong tool
The instinct is to spray the flies on the window, and it fails for a simple reason of arithmetic: for every fly you see at the glass, there may be hundreds dormant in the wall voids where no indoor aerosol reaches. You can spray every warm day from November to March and never dent the reservoir behind the drywall. On top of that, indoor spraying puts pesticide right where your family spends time — windowsills, light fixtures — to kill a nuisance insect that isn’t breeding, biting, or contaminating anything inside.
The right response to the flies already indoors is mechanical: vacuum them up. A vacuum removes them without a mess and you empty the canister afterward. But that’s cleanup, not control. The control happens outside, months earlier.
What actually works: treat outside, then seal
Two coordinated moves break the cycle, and timing is everything.
The first is an exterior treatment in late summer to early fall, before the flies mass. A residual barrier goes on the sunny south and west walls, the soffits and eaves, and around windows and doors — the surfaces the flies land on during their fall assault — so they’re knocked down on the outside before they get in. This only works while they’re still outside: treat in late August or September and you catch the wave; wait until October and most have already slipped into the walls; wait until winter and there’s no effective treatment left until the following fall.
The second is sealing the entry points — the soffit-and-fascia junctions, gaps around window and door frames, utility penetrations, and the cracks where siding meets foundation. Every gap closed is one the flies can’t use this fall or any fall after, which is why sealing pays off across seasons rather than just one. Together, the barrier thins the incoming wave and the sealing shuts the doors it’s coming through.
It’s worth being blunt about why the Clintonville area gets hit so hard. Cluster flies need earthworms, and earthworms need soil — lawn, pasture, cropland, woodlot floor. Nearly every home here sits in exactly that: farmhouses ringed by fields, village homes with big lawns and mature trees, lake cabins tucked into wooded lots. The more open, worm-rich ground surrounding a building, the larger the local fly population it sits in, and the worst-hit houses tend to be tall, pale, older structures with big south and west exposures on open ground — which describes a great deal of the rural building stock in this part of Wisconsin. That’s not a defect in the property; it’s simply the ecology of living in a river-and-farm landscape, and it’s the environment the exterior barrier is built for.

Mark the calendar for late August, because the single most common mistake is waiting until the flies are inside — by then the treatment window has closed. Keep sealing as the building ages; a gap that opens at the fascia over the summer is next fall’s entry point. Vacuum, don’t spray, the ones that get in. And recognize that a prominent, pale, multi-story house on open ground near lawn and fields is close to a worst case for cluster flies — not a defect, just the ecology of living here — which means it’s exactly the kind of building that benefits most from an annual exterior barrier.
